The Pigeon Blood Discus is a selectively bred variety of discus fish, celebrated for its intense, ruby-red hues and distinctive black peppering against a pale yellow-orange base. This visually striking phenotype was first developed in Thailand in 1989 by breeder Kitti Phanaitthi, and has since become one of the most popular strains in the aquarium hobby.

Key Characteristics

• Coloration: Rich ruby-red tones with black “peppering” or spotting; base coloration is typically pale yellow-orange.

• Eyes: May display red or yellow irises, adding to their vivid appearance.

• Origin: Bred from domesticated discus strains; not found in the wild.

• Lineage: Developed in Thailand, with the name “Pigeon Blood” referencing the deep red hue of premium rubies from Myanmar.

Care Requirements

• Experience Level: Best suited for experienced aquarists due to specific water and dietary needs.

• Water Conditions: Soft, warm, slightly acidic water (ideal pH 6.0–6.8; temperature 82–86°F); requires excellent filtration and frequent water changes.
