Lake Tanganyika Cichlids – Focus on Neolamprologus caudopunctatus

Lake Tanganyika, a deep rift valley lake in East Africa, hosts hundreds of endemic cichlid species that have adapted to a range of underwater habitats. These cichlids vary in size, color, and behavior, making them popular among aquarium hobbyists.

One smaller and manageable species is Neolamprologus caudopunctatus, native to Zambia’s Cape Chitika and Nkamba Bay. It lives in sandy, rocky areas at depths of 6 to 50+ feet in hard, alkaline water (pH 7.8–8.8, 75–84°F).

These torpedo-shaped, cream-colored fish feature pearl-like spots on the caudal fin, yellow dorsal and anal fins, white pelvic fins, and blue-rimmed eyes. Males grow up to 3 inches and are slightly larger than females. When stressed or defending territory, they display striking vertical stripes and aggressive postures.

Their small size, attractive appearance, and interesting behaviors make them ideal for medium to small aquariums.
